Security FeaturesNAIL HOLESHorseshoes are not drop stamped because it is not possible to pitch the nail holes at an angle. Instead shoes are forged and the nail holes punched at an angle, just like the farrier does when hand making shoes. This allows the nails to be driven well up the foot, which keeps the shoe in place longer. CLIPS TO KEEPTHE SHOE IN PLACEHot forged clips are standard on all shoes; two side clips on the hind and one central toe clip on the front shoe. Racehorses, by custom, have one toe clip on the front and hind. HEELSShoes are made will a choice of heel profiles such as tapered(Supershoe Front), upright (Traditional and Bold) and a combination of inside safed edge with taper and upright (Surefit Hinds) and both heels upright with inside heels safed off (Ideal Hind). COTTAM HORSESHOE QUALITYHorseshoes are made at the Cottam Forge in Chesterfield, England. They are made from a specially rolled mild steel (0.005-0.006 carbon content). This ensures that the horseshoes are strong enough to withstand the wear and tear, but ductile enough to alter. All horsehoes are forged hot by a unique process developed at the Cottam forge over a number of years. The results of such is a shoe of uniform shape and clips with clear nail holes to make the shoe quicker to fit without time consuming alterations and back pritchelling. We also clip the horseshoes hot, as we consider this is the only way to produce clips that do not crack or tear during fitting. There may be cheaper shoes on the market but they do not match our quality or standard. They will generally take longer to fit than ours and will therefore increase the cost of shoeing the horse. CHOOSING THE CORRECT PROFILECottam horseshoes are available in either bold for fullered concave profile. Bold is perfect fot the heavier weight horse due to the extra support it offers the hoof and continuous wide groove to reduce slipping. Fullered concave is recommended for thoroughbreds or the more lightly-bred sporthorses.
